SUSTAINABILITY :: A Changeis Amongstus

The Earth will be perfectly fine... it's the humans beings that we're not so sure about.

We believe that people and companies need to evolve and adapt to the changing conditions of society and the environment. In our time, people are demanding companies do their part to reduce the pollution that is crippling our land, air and water. This why we try to reduce our negative impact on the evironment through both our work and the way we live. It's about more than just using recycled paper (though that's good too). We at Modern Species work constantly to educate ourselves about the environmental impact of our business so that we help our clients without hurting the people they serve.

Skype meeting

  • So we had a skype meeting:

Things I was going to fond out for the meeting

Printing costs:
  • How do they work with Graphic Design studio? Some kind of deal? contract?
  • Or do they ever just recommend to clients and get finders fees?
  • how does the costing work? per hour? per run?
  • Example of quotes, with different types of paper, different print jobs, different finish
eg. how much for 10000 leaflets, double sided, gloss fisnish etc.
  • how much extra for certain finishes
  • list of what they can produce

From the meeting we decided

  • consider needing a few printers as they mught be busy
  • business plan? each person fill a business plan for monday
  • see how much competitors are selling, compare with them
  • recommending printer to clients instead of dealing with it ourselves
  • press ad- local news paper
  • design magazine
  • google

Choosing the Right Printing Company

need to consider,

-the amount of prints that we need
-there are online printing companies but as Graphic designers we should probably work closely with a specific printing company. Need to have a relationship with them.
-colour capabilities
-what special finishes can they accommodate
-costs of digital and offset litho
-how do the printers work together
-proofing
-location?
-delivery
-how big can they print
-how 'anal' are they

Compared to Duffields, I think these guys would probably be the more appropriate choice of printers for our company.

their wide range of special finishes would be able to support the kind of work we will be producing so it will be less likely for us to have to go to other printers. So we would be able to work with just one printer

Enterprise: comparing printers

From our group discussion, we decided that the two main printers we wanted to look at were Duffields and Team Impressions. I wanted to compare them, along with the others, which printer would be the most suitable for the type of work we would be producing . ( high end print , most likely with a wide range of special finishes. )

Duffields:

Litho and Digital

Digital:

The entry level investment is £300,000 so we take digital seriously with the very best kit in the world, HP Digital Technology.

Litho :

Heidelberg 10 Colour (5 x 5) Perfecting B2
(inclusive of every conceivable extra)

Komori B2 5 colour
(inclusive of every conceivable extra)

They also seem to be quite environmentally conscience.

Their core values are:

  1. "Delivering the promise"
  2. "An eye for detail, a passion for quality"
  3. I am open to change and ideas from ASK, Always Seek Knowledge
  4. I do not tolerate mediocrity, negative attitudes or poor workmanship
  5. I have three common features amongst my work colleagues, alignment, ability, and respect
  6. I contribute to make our quality so valuable to our customers that we become their preffered printers by default
  7. I have bought into the vision of Martyn Duffield and contribute with enthusiasm and skill to enable me to join in the success

Where? Kirkstall, Leeds

From the website, you couldn't get that much information about exactly what kind of print they do. They have case studies on their but it would have probably been more useful to have a list of the kind of stuff they do
