Doopla Designer Collective

http://www.dooplacollective.com/

  • multi disciplinary
  • typography
  • conceptual
  • but not sustainable
  • some nice illustration with conventional type
  • creative 'about' > makes them stand out . makes you this what kind of designers work in this studio

Purpose : London

http://www.purpose.co.uk

  • a lot of editorial
  • printed media including asdvertising
  • london
  • really nice style of editorial work
  • they use lots of photography which is not one of my specialty but it would still be really good to learn
  • I dont think I will be emailing them as I dont think this is the most appropriate studio for me to contact

Studio Makgill

They have some really nice branding which I really like and also , Their mission ' thought before action'. They also design quite a wide range of print design including billboards and a lot of editorial design.

I know its not a sustainable Graphic design but I think that it would also be a good idea for me to contact them anyway. They may not be interested in the environment but I'm still interested in becoming a good designer.

Task 4: Who else is out there-how good are they ?

Who am I competing against?

Other graduating Graphic Designer students from all over the country. Also other Graphic Designers looking for new jobs

What do they offer?

Some of the these competing Graphic designers may have had more experience than me. Those who have already practiced as a designer in the real world obviously has experience as their advantage. Many graduating Graphic designers would have had at least one or two work experience. Apart from that.

What makes me better/ different?

First of all, other than the enterprise module that we have been doing at the Art college ( which I don't think many other colleges do) I will be doing a masters degree in MBA after I graduate from this college. Therefore I will have a more extensive knowledge about marketing and businesses which could become a huge advantage to my potential employers.
The Leeds college of art and design provides students with facilities that not many other colleges do and I have had the chance to familiarize myself with many of those facilities. Eg. Letter press, a great print and digital resources.

One of my values in my design practice is sustainable Graphic Design. Some agencies/ companies seeks designers who are environmentally and socially responsible.

Evaluate strengths and weaknesses of 3 design agencies

BEAM-

The strengths of BEAM agencies are that the studio is based in central London, which is in the heart of many businesses. It should not be easy for them to gain clients. They are also committed to designing with concerns for the environment in their mind. This is an ethical company that also produces work of the highest quality. They also take on a wide range of jobs from print to interactive to environmental designs. Their weaknesses would be that they are quite a small firm, but this could be what they were looking for. Their printed designs are quite similar to each other, almost generic. So, I would say that many of their designs are quite save , but that could be exactly what the clients want thought.

Celery Design-

This is quite a big agency with two studios in California and Paris. So, this could be both a strength and a weakness. There will be different types of people working towards toward the same goal with the same values. However, a smaller agency, designers might be more close knitted while working with each other. They are also very committed in sustainable Graphic Design. One of their founders is actually the author of ‘ Green Graphic Design’ a well-known book that most sustainable Graphic Designers would have read. The agency’s work is of the highest quality, especially with innovative sustainable designs. They’re very active a d involved. Lots of events and conferences etc. They are so focused on sustainable Graphic Design, naturally that would be a good thing. However, all their clients are all ‘green’ organizations and I am also really interested in layout and editorial designs but they don’t do very many of those.

Firebelly-

A design agency based in central Chicago. This is also quite a large agency I think but not as big as Celery design. One strength that I feel really strongly about as it directly relates to me is that they have a large section on their website about internships and how to apply etc. this shows that they welcome young students to be a part of their practice and giving us a chance to experience the real industry. They have a wide range of clients as well which is great for networking etc. I’m finding it quite hard to find weaknesses by just looking at their websites. So far, I feel like may be the agency gives off a bit of cooperate and generic feeling. A less carefree one but perhaps that’s not a bad thing?

To evaluate, there are many opportunities available to me but I will competing against so many other graduating and already practicing Graphic Designers. From looking at these design agencies, some are more vocal about their interest in taking internships. And some of them, a bigger agency than the other might also be more interested in accepting younger less experience designers as they will have more capabilities and resources to accept new young designers. All of these agencies are very committed to sustainable Graphic design. I need to make sure that I show them that I am also committed in the same values that they are in order for the 'opportunities' to present themselves. In order to stand out from the other competing designers, my portfolio will need to consist of a wide range of design works with different media. I have had the advantage of the facilities provided by the Leeds college of art such as, a great digital and print resources. We are able to build a strong portfolio showing our capabilities to work with a range of media ( some, others have had not the opportunity to ) and this is what will make me stand out from the rest. Lastly, although these agencies are quite big already and will have extensive knowledge in marketing and businesses, they might still see my degree in MBA as an advantage for their company especially compared to other young designers like me without such knowledge. Along with the right portfolio that shows my commitment in sustainable graphic design I hope that an opportunity to work in one of these firms or firms like these will present themselves.

Task 3: How will I promote myself

I this task I want to focus on two possible groups of potential clients. One is Graphic Design studios who may be my potential employers or if I was working as a free lance Graphic Designer, a group of people who may want to hire me to design for them. ( non-profit organization, ones to do with sustainability and they may be looking for a designer)

In the last task I focused on one Graphic Design firm, BEAM

This is their mission statement

To evalute ' How will I promote myself'

I believe that the client group would want to hear that I am a fresh young Graphic Designer who can bring in new engaging vibrant work. I can provide them with a different perspective and this may help their work to stand out. I would also let them know that I am very committed in sustainable Graphic Design and this is one of the reasons why I seek them. ( and other Graphic Design studios like them ) Using the 'communication mix' I would try and get my work into as many exhibitions as possible. The art college offers many opportunities for design students to show case their work. Many young designers put on joint exhibitions of their work. Then we can advertise these events through the college, who have many visiting Graphic Designers, firms, etc. I have my own blog and will need to create a personal website which also links to my blog. But on my website, there would be my portfolio of my selected work. The portfolio will show the kind of work I have been creating and this will show my potential clients/ employers of my commitment in sustainable Graphic Design. ( as many of my work at the end of my 3rd year will be concerned with sustainable Graphic Design). I wouldn't be using direct mails as one of the methods to get my work/name out there as this may look contradictory to my beliefs. I think that my main method of getting myself out there would be online. ( websites, online social network) I could also try and get my work into magazines, especially design magazines. Many of them have ' green' issues or features on the environment. Eg. IdN magazine recently had a 'green' issue where they featured many young upcoming designers who are environmentally committed. Also, networking events could be something that is beneficial to me. Perhaps ones that are concerned with the environment or those of non-profit organizations. Many organizations will need a designer to either do their branding on promotional work. I could even offer to may be take a job ( perhaps the first one ) for free, that way I am building up a CV and portfolio showing my commitment to my values.

Root Studio

Root studio

'

ALthough this is a sustainable Graphic design studio but I really dont like any of their work. I thought that I would put this on my blog as well. I want to show both the type of design I am interested in and the type of design that I am not such a big fat off.

I think that their design is quite mainstream and 'popuar' but its not the kind of Graphic design I would like to be producing.

Thomas.Metthews: London

http://thomasmatthews.com/index.php

homas.matthews is a leading practice in sustainable communications.

We produce high quality, innovative design at a time when simplicity of solution and clarity of message matters. To put it another way, we believe in good* design. *appropriate, sustainable and beautiful.

When we say appropriate we mean communicating the message through the most effective medium to the right audience. Sustainable we define as design that has embedded systemic sustainability. And beautiful, through the creation of an eye catching and well-crafted outcome.

Our studio has teamed up with global corporations, architects and planners, museums, governments and world changing NGOs to create a whole range of projects. Whether it’s design for branding, consultation, campaigns, print, web, signage or exhibitions, sustainability is always in mind. It’s not a ‘buzz word’ to us and we haven’t retro-fitted it onto our list of services. It’s been the foundation of our studio from the start and we’re always pushing to do better.

Thinking differently

Priorities are changing – design and communication need to reduce negative environmental impacts and enhance the positives within society. Not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because this opens up a whole new creative world.

Backwards thinking has never been so important – we go on a journey together to consider the outcomes of our design right from the start, reducing the negative impact in your emissions and resource use. This allows us to avoid the roadblocks to creating authentic design that makes sense for you and the next generation.

Working together

Our 12 years of experience in this area has allowed us to understand how to turn business CSR and sustainable strategy into creative, appealing and understandable outputs. So much of the time we see good intention lost in design that does not fulfil the vision behind it. Sustainability in business should give integrity, not greenwash and should inspire change from your consumers and clients.

Unsustainable is not a word of the future – you can either watch this movement happen, or join in and discover where it can take you. The good news is that if you embrace this way of thinking, real opportunities like cost savings and brand differentiation open up.

Lowres Creative Studio

Sustainable Graphic Designer. I really like this style of design ( poster) illustration with nice bold and clean type.
I als really like this design at the fact that he also do branding. I know that this is just one designer and not a studio but I think it might be a good idea to contact him for some feedback on my work

Task 2: Where are they- How will they find me?

Local : TCDC ( Thailand Creative and Design Centre) Thailand

This one is a little different from the rest of client groups I have found. It was quite difficult to find a Graphic Design studio in Thailand that pride themselves in sustainability. In fact, it was hard finding a Grpahic Design Agency at all. However, they do employ many creatives in order to promote their events and workshops. ( through a variety of media). I am very familiar with the centre as I am a frequent visitor to the design library.

The TCDC was originally establish by the previous prime minister to provide up coming designers , student and entrepreneurs the opportunity to acquire the most updated and varied knowledge in software and the industry.
The government has established Thailand Creative & Design Center (TCDC) one of the 8 divisions under the Office of Knowledge Management and Development (OKMD), Office of the Prime Minister. TCDC is also in cooperation with private sectors, SME entrepreneurs and designers aim to raise public awareness of using design to add value to their products along with helping Thai designers work gain visibility in the local and global marketplace. Therefore I think the center would be interested in a diversity within their organization. I am a Thai student studying Graphic Design in the UK and could provide them with an alternative perspective on the creative design industry.

The philosophy of the TCDC is '"New expressions of creativity create jobs and income. Though creative thinking and economics appear to be separate matters, we must put them together".

National : BEAM London

BEAM is a Graphic design consultancy based in London who pride themselves in their design and their environmental commitment. When I first came across this company, I thought that this is the kind of place I would really like to work. They seem to know what they are talking about and really do care about the environment. Their commitment is shown through their company's website. They comply with all relevant environmental legislation and codes of practice and keep themselves up to date with environmental news. Another reason why I was really interested in this company is that they also produce a lot of publications. In this econimic crisis, one of The problem with sustainable design is that many clients still believe this to be a more expensive option and some may be out off. On the other hand, more and more people are becoming more aware of the impact their companies may have on the environment and therefore are becoming more environmentally responsible. Clients who need something branded or designed have their own clients and if they can say that their company is 'green' then that provides them with an extra 'point' for loving the environment which will boost their financial situation. Technology has evolved so much that its becoming cheaper for a designer to be sustainable. With the government becoming more and more supportive of solving these environmental challenges, designers , who are seen as one of the largest contributors to global warming and 'ruining' the environment, I think it is important for one to take responsibility.

European : Celery Design Paris

Celery Design is a studio graphic design studio who also believe in cutting edge green design working across different media. They are very well established with Brain Daugherty who is the author of the well know book, ' Green Graphic Design'

"One of Celery’s roles over the years has been as an advocate for a new model of graphic design that deals proactively with social and environmental challenges. Through frequent lectures, magazine articles and public outreach projects such as the Ecological Guide to Paper, Celery has worked to influence other graphic designers to embrace sustainability as a crucial design objective. Celery’s work in this area was recognized with an Environmental Leadership Award from the American Institute of Graphic Arts. The firm’s work has been featured in numerous publications including ID Magazine’s ID 40 list of influential design firms."

We advocate that designers actively engage with people both upstream (relating to business strategy and marketing plans) and downstream (relating to materials, manufacturing, and distribution) from the traditional designer’s area of expertise. The major goal of engaging upstream from the traditional designer’s role is to shift the focus of “green” design from a battle over cost to a strategic conversation about value. By collaborating with our clients and reframing projects in this way, we find that many roadblocks simply disappear. Rather than fight with every little element of the status quo, we try to change the context so that the status quo no longer holds sway. Green design can often perform well on the cost side of the equation, but adding value is the most effective strategy for green designers.

Transitional: Firebelly Design Chicago

"Firebelly is a super-talented team of patient listeners, genius problem solvers and forward thinking designers"

"We’re tenacious about creating meaningful design, developing sustainable strategies and combining both to change the world.

Our expertise is in Authenticity + Sustainability. Firebelly believes in honest storytelling and genuine experiences—the sincere things that simply can’t be faked or forced. Creating sustainable design and developing successful long-term strategies means we consider more than the present needs of our clients: we strive to be future-proof and considerate of our global impact.

Whether in print, online or in motion" href="http://firebellydesign.com/capabilities/integrated">motion, we connect people in meaningful ways, produce tangible results and deliver more than our clients expect."

...I think that says it all really.

The company is based in Chicago and it is another outstanding studio who believe in the same things that I believe in. I have little to no knowledge of the political and economic situations in Chicago but I am pretty certain that the relation design industry and the environment are the same. and my analysis of the 'beam' studio could also be applied to this design studio.

250 statement ( parts taken from my analysis)

BEAM is a Graphic design consultancy based in London who pride themselves in their design and their environmental commitment. In order to get their attention, I must show them that I, as a graduating Graphic Designer am really committed to becoming a part of something that has such high values. Part of the reason why I chose this company is also because of the actual style and aesthetics of their design. But, in their choice of designer who they would want to employ. As well as showing them a portfolio that meets their standards I would also want to show what I can bring to the company that will benefit them. I would have had little experience in the design industry , so perhaps a fresh perspective on design and designing for sustainability. they work in across a wide range of media, I am bound to please them in one of them and this is what i intend to do. Specialize and gain skills that others may not have: knowledge in sustainability and design eg. green technology.

Enterprise Task 1: Who am i? Who are they ?

Notes

The 4 P's.

the product- the work that is produced, in this case, published would depend on both my creative in put and my design skills such as my typography skills and my knowledge of the how publishing houses work. The product would be either magazines, books, newspapers, journals and other publications.

The price- depending on the number of prints runs, type of publications, clients etc.

The place-

Promotion-

The client group ( who are looking for creative talent) that I have chosen is the publication houses and (sustainable Graphic Design studios who are involved with publication) One of the main areas of Graphic Design I am interested in is publishing, more specifically, typography, editorial design and layout design. But I am also very concerned about keeping my design practice sustainable. Therefore the main groups would be publication houses (magazine and book publishers) with in house Graphic Designers with an interest in sustainable design. The skills that I have that will relate to the needs of my client group are the basic typographic and lay out skills that I have recently gained. I can fluently use Indesign which is one of the main softwares used in layout design. I also have basic knowledge about printers and the printing process. However, there are skills that I still need to develop to better myself in this particular field. I definitely need to develop more type skills which I will get to do in this type module after christmas. I need to look at more magazines and other interesting editorial design to gain knowledge of the current trends. I would also like to learn more about the print processes, more specifically, ones used to print books, magazines and newspapers.

My creative and professional aim is to be able to produce work at the highest standards possible and I would like to gain skills that will differentiate me from all the other competing Graphic Designers. As mentioned I'm also very interested in sustainable Graphic design and I would very much like to work for clients who also have the same values as me.

Module Self Evaluation

This year has definitely been a big learning curve for me, both about Graphic Design and myself.

First of all, the project.

What is good?

What problem did you identify?

My project was about encouraging Graphic Designers to become more sustainable in their practice

What evidence did you find to support your decisions?

I did some research over the holidays as part of the summer brief. It started off as 'Sustainable Design' being part of what I think is good. So, I looked into what sustainability is and how it linked in with Graphic Design.

and it is quiet self explanatory why sustainable design is good.

I found statistics about sustainability in general and then focused in on the Design part of it.
So, a lot of my research were secondary quantitative. I also read a cou0ple of books on Sustainable Design, so, a lot of those were opinions but they were well supported opinions by the experts, etc.

what I enjoyed the most were reading essays and interviews from designers who also believe in sustainability and the different specific issues they were more interested in.

For this project, i decided to focus into on the waste part of it and I wanted to encourage designers to think about waste and designing for longevity.

How did these inform your response to your problem?

Obviously, these information that i gather formed the basis of my project. This project was mainly about facts and getting the message through via statements and facts that will have impact on the audience.

What research could you have carried that would have proved more useful?

I read about design studios that are 'green' and case studies of the different 'green' projects but I really could have done with actually talking to someone who works in a sustainable design studio or a Graphic design who practices Sustainable designs and the different obstacles they have to meet and what they do to convince their clients/ peers that it is good.

The five things that you have learnt about design process over the last five weeks

As mentioned right at the beginning, this module / start of the year has been a big learning curve for me.

1. The print module: I feel like this year we have had a lot more taught sessions where its not really about finding out about yourselves ( like it was in the first year ) but more about the technical side of things. Its been a real eye opener. We've learn about the actual print process and the different types of printing you can do.So, rather than learning about the 'design process' its the 'print process' that we have learnt

2. As mentioned above this is a print module where we have been learning about the different types of print you can do. With all this new knowledge its really made me think more about 'how I am making this piece of design and not just 'what I'm making' which makes the whole process a lot harder. In the first year, it used to just be,...' so this looks nice on illustrator, lets jus print it and hand it in' . but now, I'm thinking about how this design would fit into the real world and how it would be made in the real world. you're now considering the appropriate stock to go with the appropriate type of printing and the different print finishes you can do. the end product never just comes out of a printer anymore...there is a million other processes you can go through to perfect your piece of design.

3. Too much research is not good. During this brief, as it was a lot to do with research....I did a lot of researching and I wouldn't say it was too much research but in ratio of the actual designing....it was probably too much. I managed to turn around and sort this problem out in time ( i hope ) but I did fall into the trap of researching before even thinking. during my tutorial, Lorenzo pointed out the me the problem and how it could easily be fixed. just before any research, just think of something. do something. and when you get stuck....you research. There's no point building up a massive body of research if you're not going to know how to use them!

4. Be ridiculously picky. This print module has reinforce this idea of being a perfectionist on me. The print process and working with printers....you have to be a perfectionist and very thorough in your work.
This is kinda of two points in one. When I thorough, I mean within your design...eg. typography and the other one is being thorough when you're preparing you design for the printers. eg. colour, links, images, file type etc.

5. I love type. ( and layout) This year has definitely confirmed my love in type. I was interested in it last year but as I started using more type in my work and using InDesign ( also in the summer holiday ) I am now a firm believer in typography. However, at the moment, I'm looking at some of my work and I like the type in them but in my head I'll always now that they can be better. I know I don't know enough about it yet and I'm still devleopping the 'eye of type' but I feel like I'm getting there and I'm just realy excited about the type module next term. I want to know more!

List five things that you would do differently next time

1. Research it the right way.
perhaps a more organized way of research. I think I definitely need to improve the relationship between my research, and my practice.

2. Just draw/ put anything down that comes to my head ( project related). I've definitely been too careful and cautious at following through with an idea. I just need to follow through with an idea and if I don't like it , I just have to make a decision and change it

SKETCH BOOK.

3. This one is kind of related to the previous point. If I had an idea of DOING something. instead of talking about doing it. I should just do it.

eg. for this project I wanted to make a poster/calendar using scrap materials. I wanted to make my own paper out of old scrap paper and I did manage to do it but quite close to the end of the module so I didnt actually get to try and make different types of paper and see what they would look like if I were to print onto them digitally ( or even if I could!?) or if I screen printed them.

I've basicallt just managed to make the paper and then screen print onto them. and that was all I managed to do.

I wish I could have had test pieces.

4.Talk more to tutors. I've talked to my friends about my project quite a lot this year. more than last year which is an improvement but I still feel like I still don't have enough confidnece to just find a tutor and start talking about my project. ( unless I absolutely needed to )

5. I need Remember that ....when you print things out....they literally look nothing like how they look on screen.....
test print and just have this in mind when I'm deisiging.

Final crit feedback

On the design boards:

Board one-

1 big image of packaging and says it all!
smaller shots to show the details ( eg. tear here)

that's all needed

explain print process but not long sentence describing things

Board two- packaging in context? and pencil holder

Board three-booklet

Board four- one BIG image of poster incontext...and the little ones dowe the bottom to show range?

Board five- pad printing...better pics of studio stuff..DON't be so safe.
something more creative
too predictable at the moment

In general

type- way too big ( 12/14 max)

1 image that explains everything

so, more bigger images....less book-like

too much explanation....only need to put specifications and things that people couldn't figure out by looking at the pictures. less explanation more description

think A2 -twice the size....think TYPE

don't be afraid to have white space

make a hitlist

eg,

heirachy- how do u want the audience to follow, where to look first etc.
toye
image
white space
text-descriptive?
print process
relationship of posters
color of images/tone

Progress Tutorial Sheet from Lorenzo

Issues/plans from self assessment form :

  • Talked about the relationship between research and the design process

Elective Module Title: TYPE

Other Issue discussed with tutor:

  • PPD thread concerning sustainable companies that needs to be followed up
  • Design more!- much more visual response needed

Actions:

  • Start the 'eco' PPD thread and start to make contacts
  • Do more visual ideas

I am becoming more and more interested in editorial design and I think that I will start to look at more studios that are editorial based.

Design Can Change

Design Can Change is an initiative that helps designers make the environment a bigger priority while uncovering ways to combat climate change.

The website is an online portal for graphic designers to learn more about global warming: the issue, potential for change, actions to take, the community building around it, and resources for further learning. The premise for the entire project is that designers play a large role at the beginning of lots of different projects and businesses; by educating them on how to design with more sustainable practices, they can make more positive proactive change rather than waiting to band-aid the problem later.

Take the pledge

By joining with other designers we build critical mass. This helps us illustrate our strength when we lobby government to institute change and ask suppliers to make sustainable options available. Additionally, those who sign the pledge are automatically listed in the Design Can Change directory, which allows green- conscious buyers to locate like-minded designers.

This website really inspired me and that although they are not a design company themselves I think it would still be a really good idea for me to get in touch with them whether for just some general feedback on my design work or how to tackle this issue of sustainability and design.

GROUP TUTORIAL PREP.

1. What is Industrial experience?
  • An opportunity to gain an insight into your chosen field of practice and learn about how professionals in that particular line of work carry out their businesses and interact with each each other.
  • Being able to work along side with and learn from professionals who are specialized in a particular field of design in order to gain an understanding in how they fit into the general market / commercial world . eg. commercial printing, publication house, packaging design, cooperate branding and etc.
  • A networking opportunity where you can meet professionals and potential clients. The more people you meet the higher chance there is of one of them may be becoming your future employer or someone you may want to work with. Eg. if you need to find a printer for a particular project, it may be a good idea to know a few who you can trust and rely on.
  • Gaining more practical skills that you may need to have in order to operate in the 'real world' that you may not have had a chance to learn at college. Eg, pitching ideas to actual clients, proofing, business skills etc.
  • A chance to clarify the type of practice you would want to have from seeing already existing ones work in context. It might allow to you figure out your values, mission and vision in your future practice or the design studio you would want to work for.
2. What can you learn from industrial experience?
  • Skills and knowledge that you may be unable to gain fully from a classroom.eg. pitching ideas to real clients, working with printers/publication houses etc.
  • How the different types of design industries interact with each other when a project concerns more that one. ( externally)
  • How design studio operates internally and the different roles each person takes in order to complete a project.
  • You can also gain a better understand about yourself and how you may wish to operate in a design practice once the time comes. What kind of designer are you- a collaborator? a project manager? etc.
  • How to interact with different types of people which may or may not be in your particular field of work. They may not even be working within a design industry at all.
3. What form/format could industrial experience take?

  • Internship
  • Work Placement
  • Self directed - freelancing
  • A Part time job
  • Studio Visit
  • Design competitions
4. What areas of industry are you interested in?

  • Editorial Design
  • Sustainable (Graphic) Design
  • Sustainable Packaging
  • Branding / logo design
  • Typography
  • Web Design ( a growing interest but not experience )
  • Design with a social responsibility
5. What are your concerns about industrial experience?

  • Not being able to find one.
  • Not being to find one that will be internationally recognized enough as I will be in Thailand for most of the time where we will be doing internships.
  • Not making the most out of the particular industrial experience because designers are not willing to teach but only giving make use of me for jobs they don't want to do.
  • Doing one and realizing that.....may be I can't do this.
  • Being given too much responsibilities that I might not be able to manage....or the opposite...not given any and treated as a kid.

What do I want to achieve?

What do I want to achieve this year?
  • A greater understanding of the design industry especially ones that are concerned about sustainability. I would like to find out more about what goes on inside 'green' or 'sustainable' design studios and what designers are doing to make their practice 'sustainable'
  • A clearer and more focused design process/development. When starting a new project I would like to have a more systematic way of approaching possible solutions but at the same time not so much that I lose the creativity and freedom to play around if I wanted to.
  • A better understanding in typography, layout design, sustainable design and branding. These are the areas in Graphic design that I am becoming more and more interested in.
  • Web Design Skills
  • A better presentation skills

What do I want to achieve by the end of the course?

Enterprise Lecture 4 : How to successfully promote yourself in 6 easy steps

That's the how, here's the what
  • Marketing Communication Mix

This is what you need to achieve- may just be a few aspects of it.

How to successfully promote yourself in 6 easy steps

1. Get their attention
  • Memorable business card
  • Advertising
  • Events
  • Radio Interviews
  • Wrote articles
  • Run a blog
  • Exploit social media
  • Publicity
Note: This is something that you have to keep up. NOT a one off thing. So your name appears here and there.

2. Build their interest
  • Website <>
  • Portfolio
  • Information Packs( free?)
  • Catalog
  • Curation
  • Exhibitions- Always have something ( your work )on you, in picture files on your Iphone?

3. Convince them
  • Artist Statement
  • Recommendations
  • Testimonials
  • Awards
  • Community engagement
  • Professional Bodies
  • Charity Events

4. Make you offer irresistible
  • Value Proposition
  • Pricing strategies
  • Packaging- not the 'box' but the service, commitment...you as the package
  • Try before you buy
  • Recommendations
  • Differentiation- able to tell them why you're different from everyone else. Therefore you need to know what everyone else is doing, who they are and what they do ? and don't do . Convince people you're better
5. Close the sale- This is the most difficult thing to tackle
  • Convenience
  • Buy it now
  • Right place, right time
  • Delivery
  • Personal selling
  • Interactice website
Start to ask them questions ( clients, investors, etc.)- Is there anything I've missed? anything they have to know? Would you like to make this deal today ? If they hesistate, ask them if there's anyone else? If they say no to deal today....STOP.

6. Reinforce
  • After sales service
  • Advertising
  • Public Relations
  • Longevity
  • Merchandising
  • Maintaining Contact
  • Building Relationships
7. AIDA- Attention, Interest, Desire, Action

WHO? ( are we targeting this at? ) Target your market
  • How to we define customers?
Media Usage
  • Newspapers
  • Magazines
  • Radio/TV
  • Internet
  • Social Media
  • Trade Magazines
  • Public Space Ad.
  • Parish Magazine
  • Specialist industry magazines
  • marketing magazines
  • business magazines
  • Radio in the car
  • Airline magazine
  • Industry exhibition
  • conferences
  • networking events
  • Broadsheet newspaper

KEY: knowing where out customers go for information tells you how to read them

Don't assume they're reading what you're reading.

Customer Segmentation
  • Demographics
  • Geographical Factors
  • Life Style (psycho-graphics)
  • Media Usage

Eg.

a person could be both a marketing director of some company, but at the same time, a keen cyclist. They could also be involved with their local community....etc etc,

Who is that person being when they're thinking of you ?

Enterprise Workshop

First we were asked to write a 50 word summary about ourselves and our practice on 15 minutes. We were also asked not to start it with 'I' and try and use as little 'I's as possible in those fifty words.

I didn't quite finish mine and it was a bit rubbish but here goes,

In my design practice the lies with in sustainability. When you work with me you will find that I will consider the environmental impact that my piece of design may have and were it will end up after it's served its purpose. Aside from the environment I enjoy creating work that is simple, relatable but also effective. ....

then I got stuck

Then we had to take give words that were in that text/ words that says something about out practice and stick them up on the board according to their appropriate category

mine were

Practical
Simplicity
Sustainability
Enthusiastic
Layout

All the words were read out and we had to pick ten of the ones that were most appropriate to ourselves. I chose

Relatable
Sustainability
Minimal
Observations
Enthusiastic
Committed
Typography
Simplicity
Effective
Practical
